New Polar A360 Fitness Tracker. Does It Keep You At Your Best?

The new polar A360 fitness tracker is designed by a brand that I trust, a brand that is well recognized for activity tracking with pinpoint accuracy. In an ever-growing competitive market for fitness wearables, Polar has kept up with its rivalries by introducing a stylish wrist tracker that incorporates a heart rate monitor and many other features.

Is the tracker any different from the alternatives? Is it good value for money? What sets it apart? These are some of the topics I’d like to touch on below.

Product Review: Polar A360 Fitness Tracker
Colours Available: White, Black, Blue, Green, Pink
Guarantee: 1-year Limited Warranty
Product Rating: 8 out of 10 ★★★★★★★★☆☆

The core function of the Polar A360 is to monitor and record heart rate (HR) based exercise. This type of HR monitoring is based on different HR intensities that are tailored to your heart rate levels.

This allows you to track your performance with a lot more accuracy and also helps prevent over-training because you are able to switch from light, moderate and intensive exercises.

You can monitor performance improvements i.e. if you are a runner you can measure pace improvements or what part of your training suffers a dip in performance.

When you’re not pouring out buckets of sweat, there’s also the added flexibility of being able to wear the Polar A360 during your normal day and the tracker will monitor your movements and steps whilst you go about your business.

Similar to competing smartwatches, it can also be synced with iPhones or Android phones and display your notifications on its vivid touchscreen.

If you’re feeling generous, the watch can be bought as an ideal gift for friends or family that love the gym, are dedicated athletes or even beginners but chances are you’ll probably want to keep it for yourself when you take it out the box. Personally I prefer the Polar A360 in white, it looks stylish and clean 🙂

WATCH DESIGN

The Polar A360 is designed with a changeable wristband made from silicone. You have the flexibility of swapping around the wristbands which come in a range of colours (black, white, blue, green & pink). The silicone material is hypoallergenic for sensitive skin types.

Polar-A360-White-fitness-tracker

The watch has an interesting rectangular display finished in chrome at the longer edges.  It is available in 3 sizes (i.e S,M,L) for comfort and an added level of customisation. If you’re unsure about your size, Polar have provided a size chart on their site to help you get the perfect fit prior to ordering.

The display screen measures 13mm x 27mm and has a pixel density of 152 ppi with a wide-viewing angle. The display is a full-colour TFT display with a capacitive touchscreen. Underneath the A360 is Polar’s proprietary heart rate sensor with 2 LEDs to illuminate the blood vessels and a photodiode to measure your blood flow. I’ll go with that.

FUNCTIONALITY

The features on the Polar A360 are similar to rival fitness trackers on the market. Nonetheless,  I’ll go through the important ones worth mentioning.

As mentioned above, the watch incorporates a wrist-based HR monitor which is claimed to be almost as accurate as the flagship Polar H7 monitor (that straps to your chest). Hint: You can also pair the H7 monitor to the A360.

One of the A360’s primary functions is a pedometer that tracks the number of steps you’ve walked/run using its accelerometer.

Watch the video below for a Demo on Training with Wrist-based Heart Rate

It will measure your steps and calculate the distance covered during your walk or run, I’ll point out that the distance measurement is an estimate because the Polar A360 does not come with an inbuilt GPS sensor for distance.

It also measures calories burned, during your exercise session or throughout the day, based on your gender, age, weight, height and most importantly heart rate.

The A360 will also track your sleep patterns automatically if you leave it on at night. Notifications including text messages are pushed from your phone to the watch. How cool.

Polar-a360-white

Polar is renowned for its smart coaching features to help you set specific training targets, see the main effect of your workouts, measure your fitness level, or even how your running performance is developing. The A360 is no compromise and is a brilliant training companion.

Polar’s official stats claim the 100 mAh battery lasts 12 days on 1 charge based on an hour’s daily workout and notifications switch off. Users say the battery doesn’t last quite as long. I still think if the tracker is reaching anywhere near the 12-day battery life mark it’s more than acceptable.

My Top Budget Alternative for 2016: Garmin VivoSmart full Review

An added bonus is that the A360 is waterproof (up to 30 meters) and will appeal to swimmers. It probably will be difficult to use the actual touchscreen whilst swimming because, generally, touchscreens don’t respond well to water or sweat. A good way around this is to set the training program just before diving into the pool and then keep it going for the duration of your session, have your towel close by so that you can dry the screen and your hands at the end.

new-polar-a360-fitness

If you would like to use a mobile app with the A360, it works best with the Polar Flow app which can be downloaded for free. You will have access to a huge range of training programs, modes and monitoring. the A360 can be used with third-party apps on android or iOS.

The advantage of this fitness tracker is that it’s waterproof and can be worn whilst you have a bath. The wide-angle colour display is good both indoors and outside in the glaring sun. It can be charged using any Micro USB cable and it can be connected to a computer or laptop using the same cable.

PROS

  • Stylish design.
  • Integrated HR Monitor.
  • Waterproof.
  • Doubles as a smartwatch.
  • Color Touchscreen display.

CONS

  • No inbuilt GPS.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • Polar A360 activity tracker and wristband (depending on colour selection).
  • Micro USB cable to charge the device.
  • Manual.

MY FINAL SAY

For a premium gadget, from a well-respected brand it would have been nice to have included GPS. Besides this minor setback I would say Polar make up for it through its accurate sensors and a stylishly designed fitness tracker that has a sturdy long-lasting build.

If you are looking for a training device that provides top of the range Heart rate-based training and useful data to take your performance to the next level then the A360 is great at providing you with this functionality.

Sonos Play 5 Review. Do they Deliver?

A few days ago I got home to find a package waiting for me. I found a set of Sonos Play 5 speakers ready to be taken through its paces. In this review, I’ll give you a rundown of what I loved during my time with the stylish portable boom box.

Product Review: Sonos Play 5 Wireless Speakers
Colours Available: Black, White
Guarantee: 1-year Limited Warranty
Product Rating: 9 out of 10 ★★★★★★★★★☆

Sonos-Play5-Speakers-white

Sonos produces some of the best wireless speakers. Their speakers can be used to stream music from services such as Spotify, Pandora, Rhapsody or directly from your computer through a media player like iTunes.

Sono also provides iPhone and Android apps that enable your phone to act as a controller for the above services, which do not need to be streamed directly from your phone unless you want them to be.

Sonos takes things up a notch by providing a fantastic range of customisation, the clever phone app makes it a joy to control every setting from sound quality to the simple setup and installation.

Sonos-Play5-Speakers-side

Sono Play5 can be played independently or, if your budget permits, can be simultaneously synced to other Sonos speakers and placed in different rooms for the ultimate listening experience. You can control your speakers with the same phone and set grouping options.

Each speaker has its own wireless network, amplifier, wireless access to your whole music collection on your laptop/computer or the internet, and can be controlled via the Sonos mobile apps.

If you would like to connect an existing stereo system to the Sonos setup you can do so with a Sono-Connect device which provides an input source for your stereo system.

You could also add a Sonos-Connect-Amp which is a little box that acts as both the Amp and Source for third party speakers. The Connect devices can be controlled by the Sonos mobile apps.

How well did the Sonos Play5 perform?

My favourite feature is having immediate access to the iTunes library on my computer without the need to transfer the track to my phone or tablet first. Sonos has made it seamless to use third-party music services such as Spotify and internet radio.

Playing music throughout the house using a single device (iPad or iPhone) just adds to the enjoyment of owning a Sonos system.

Sonos also make sure that the mentioned features are so simple to use that even a toddler could operate them. This simplicity doesn’t take anything away from your enjoyment and experience. If you opt for more than one speaker each one can play its own song or playlist or can be synced to play the same music group in any number of rooms.

Sonos-Play5-Speakers-side-white

You can control the volume of any speaker or adjust the volume for a particular music group. Normally this level of multi-zone functionality would cost considerably more and some speakers don’t even offer such intuitive features. A majority of airplay or Bluetooth speakers don’t offer these functions.

The fact that I’m able to play different songs in multiple rooms from an iTunes library located on one laptop/computer is technically exceptional and isn’t something you find on standard speakers.

You can also play tracks from different libraries on different computers or from network-attached storage all from a SINGLE device. Even if you don’t use some of this functionality it’s nice to know that it’s there for when you might need it in future.

 Sonos-Play5-Speakers-back

If any of my friends come over they can stream music from their iPhones to my Sonos system using apple Airplay as long as they are within wifi range. The newer versions of the Sonos Apps make this possible without the need for Airport express and allow the iPhone/iPod/iPad to stream the iTunes music from the device to the Sonos Play5 system over wifi.

The sound would travel from the mobile device to the wifi router and then from the router to the speaker via SonosNet).

From day one the Play5 speakers have been awesome and so far they work with no glitches. It’s nice to have such immediate flexible access to my music without the need for getting to the computer and plugging speakers in.

Sonos-Play5-Speakers

Bridge or No Bridge?

Earlier versions of Sonos required there to be a bridge i.e. a main Sonos speaker to be hardwired to a router. This is no longer required however it’s very useful if your other Sonos devices are not within the wifi range of your router, a bridge would be used to increase your router’s wifi range and wirelessly link the other Sonos speakers.

My house is on 3 levels and the wifi signal struggles to reach the top, so this feature is handy.

A clever Sonos Wireless Network

Each Sonos speaker can use your home Wifi network or, the Sonos Wireless Network which also provides an advantage over rival speaker because each Sonos speaker wirelessly connects directly with other Sonos speakers using a ‘wireless mesh network’.

Which means that when you have several Sonos devices, each one becomes a wireless relay to the next nearest device and the next until they reach your router. This means several Sonos speakers would give you better wireless streaming connections compared to a standard wireless speaker.

Sonos-Play5-Speakers-top

Another bonus is the Sonos wireless network is the additional ethernet port included on the Sonos speaker which would give a reliable internet connection to the internet to any device that’s able to use an ethernet port.

You would be able to expand your wifi network to out of reach areas of the house that struggle to get a strong wifi signal, by connecting a standard low-cost WiFi access point into the ethernet port of your Sonos Play5.

The clever networking system means that these ethernet ports can offer a robust network connection that would improve video streaming on services such as Netflix or AppleTV compared to the build-in Wifi on those devices.

Advantages

  1.  Complete control of your entire music collection (on one or several computers) from a single device.
  2. Because your phone acts as a controller (if you choose to) you are not wasting any of its battery life or compromising on sound quality.
  3. The volume can go really loud without any distortion or loss in quality
  4. Your phone can still answer calls or use its other functions, with no interruption to the music system. Great if you have people around and want the music to keep going.
  5. Intuitive app to easily use various music services such as Spotify, Pandora and internet radio. You can also quickly find and play local radio sorted by location or can be searched by genre, station name etc.
  6. Play5 are future-proofed to add additional Sono zones or several zones at any time
  7. The app features are compatible with both apple and android devices.

Final Verdict

I wasn’t expecting this level of functionality from a portable speaker and would say that the Sonos Play5 really delivered and made light work of features that would often be perceived as complicated to use. Well Done Sonos. You have a customer for life.

Skullcandy Wireless Headphones. They’re Cheap But Are They Cheerful?

Skullcandy Wireless Headphones

The Skullcandy Hesh 2 wireless headphones are a cheaper alternative to the pricier premium brands, Does cheap mean that you are getting an inferior product? Definitely not.

Skullcandy is known for their wacky coloured headphones that appeal to a younger audience but surprisingly, they’ve given us an option of a modest black for the conservative music listener. Let’s have a look at how these headphones performed.

Product Review: Skullcandy Hesh 2 Wireless Headphones

Price:  $96.99

Jay’s Expert rating: 7 out of 10 ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Skullcandy Hesh 2-wireless headphones

To start off with, the headphones deliver a great clean sound without too much bass. If you’ve tried Beats headphones you’ll know what I mean.

Skullcandy scores some really high marks in the comfort department. You’ll have no issue keeping them on for 5+ hours, an impressive feat for headphones in this priced at this level.

The rubbery plastic material feels durable and looks just as good. At this point, I’m wondering if there are any compromises to what feels like a great pair of wireless headphones. Syncing to my iPhone was a doddle and took mere seconds to connect. They even spoke to me to confirm when the pairing was complete.

Skullcandy-Hesh 2 wireless-

A minor issue that could be improved is, the music playback resumed on my phone’s speaker (rather than the headphone) if I answered a call using my phone instead of the headphone. The best way to get round this is to use the onboard controls to answer calls. Easy enough

    Skullcandy Hesh 2 wireless

The wireless range was decent, I could go between rooms and even upstairs away from my iPhone and the music didn’t get interrupted. Not bad for cheap headphones!

As mentioned earlier, I was able to keep the headphones on for more than 5 hours at a go and had no issues. The comfortable “ear pillows” on these cans is probably the best point.

Recharging is done using the supplied micro USB cable which connects to a port that is cleverly tucked away in the ear pad.

Skullcandy-Hesh 2 wireless- headphones

Pros:

  • Great Sound.
  • Impressive Range between phone and headphone.
  • Passive Noise Cancelling.
  • Connectivity is flawless.
  • Well positioned, sturdy controls on the ear cup.
  • The comfort matches and even exceeds some premium headphones (can be worn for long periods).
  • Good Battery life which will see you through the day
  • Will play while it’s charging, not a standard feature in this genre
  • Stylish design and feel. Strong materials

Cons:

  • They can’t be folded for travel or storage.
  • Slightly on the heavy side.

Skullcandy Hesh 2 wireless headphones

Conclusion

Skullcandy has forged a fantastic pair of headphones that eliminate the need to splash out on a pair of expensive Beats headphones.

The Hesh 2 look stylish and sound great. It holds its own when put through its paces and can be used with most, if not all, music genres and handles it all very gracefully.

They are also great if you enjoy listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or watching movies / YouTube videos on your phone, tablet or laptop.
