Choose the Best Over-The-Ear/On-Ear headphones

When it comes to choosing the perfect over-the-ear or on-ear wireless headphones it’s always best to do a bit of research before parting with your cash.

If you do the groundwork you will most likely end up with a quality product that will last a lifetime (maybe not that long but certainly for MANY years).

Wireless headphones are fast replacing the wired ones and thus eliminating the need to physically connect point A to B (cool right?) Do keep in mind that not all headphones are made equal. Transmission and build quality vary massively! (trust me on that last point).

Quality

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing your headphones is that Size Matters! We all have different sized heads and comfort plays a big part, make sure that the headband is adjustable. The foam cushions should be soft and covered in a good material such as leather because this is an area that will get the most wear and tear and has the most contact with your skin.
Transmission

Ensure that you choose a more recent model headphone that uses the latest Bluetooth standard, for lower energy consumption and compatibility with your mobile devices i.e. iPhones, iPads and so on. They should also support the aptX Bluetooth codec that provides better sound quality.

Besides listening to music, you might also want to use your headphones to make and receive calls. A lot of headphones are now designed with cleverly integrated call features that can be used directly from the headphones.

Higher-end models can even accept VoIP calls (Voice over Internet Protocol) or internet calls on mobile devices that support the Bluetooth hands-free profile, for example, Skype calls, WhatsApp calls, Google chat and FaceTime.

Accessories

Ensure that you check the list of accessories provided with your headphones (you’ll be glad that you did). At the very least you should be provided with a USB cable, that can be used to plug the headphones into a laptop or PC to charge them.

An aux audio cable is usually included which can be used to physically connect the headphones to your device if they run out of battery. Some models will also include a wall plug for faster charging compared to USB.

A carry case is also a must-have accessory to look out for. A case will prolong the life of your headphones by keeping them safe and less susceptible to damage when not in use.

You’ll be pleased to know that all the wireless headphones that I’ve tested came with the above accessories, click here for a list of the best wireless headphones that I’ve tested.

Noise Cancelling

Over-the-ear / on-ear Headphones do a good job at physically blocking out some noise but aren’t specifically designed for this purpose unless you get ones that include active noise-cancelling technology.

Cost

You don’t have to look very far to find a market that’s flooded with cheap wireless imitations from less popular brands. In this game, you definitely get what you pay for and as the saying goes “buy cheap, buy twice!”. I’m not saying that you need to spend a small fortune, but definitely spending a little more goes a long way.

I recommend that you also stick to reputable brands such as Bose or Sony (they’ve been making and refining gadgets for a very long time).
